ABSTRACT
With the implementation of digital transformation, new opportunities have emerged to help small
businesses, especially those where customer relationships become a competitive advantage. The
research we are referring to focuses on the application of Information and Communication
Technologies (ICTs) to improve customer loyalty in popular neighborhood shops in the far north
of Guayaquil. This research was conducted using a documentary methodology with a qualitative
approach, based on a literature review of studies related to ICTs, digital marketing, digital
transformation, and consumer behavior. The research revealed that the main tools used by these
neighborhood shops were social media, instant messaging applications, digital payment
platforms, and online promotional channels, with WhatsApp Business, Facebook, and Instagram
playing a particularly prominent role. These tools were used to improve communication, serve
customers, enhance the shopping experience, and foster customer loyalty by increasing customer
trust or, conversely, strengthening business relationships. However, obstacles such as a lack of
digital skills training, a lack of awareness of available technology, resistance to change, and
existing economic limitations are also observed. Based on a review of experiences in other Latin
American and Ecuadorian contexts, it is highlighted that the strategic use of ICTs contributes to
improving the competitiveness and sustainability of neighborhood businesses. Therefore,
digitalization should be understood as a comprehensive strategy that combines technology with
innovation and customer focus to support local economic development.
