Abstract

Readers' Theater is an innovative pedagogical strategy that combines theater and reading to improve reading fluency in students. The objective of this research was to measure the impact that theater has on the development of reading in fifth grade elementary school students. It is based on the idea that reading should be a meaningful and enriching experience, where students define themselves as actors and give life to the characters and stories of the texts. Through theatrical interpretation, students develop their ability to read fluently and improve their reading comprehension. A descriptive field research was conducted with 20 students in the fifth year of elementary school. Two single-teacher educational units were used for the study. For the assessment of reading fluency, focusing on aspects of speed, accuracy and prosody, the original Spanish Reading Fluency Scale (EFLE) was used. This scale proved to have a high reliability in this context according to the authors who designed the instrument, obtaining a Cronbach's alpha of 0.91. The results of the present study reveal that most of the participants had adequate speed and accuracy in their reading after the use of the readers' theater. However, some students presented difficulties in decoding words and showed variations in volume and intonation when reading. These results indicate the importance of continuing to work on the development of reading fluency, especially in aspects such as accuracy and expressiveness.
