Abstract

This article reviews the impact of artificial intelligence (AI)-based digital technologies in higher education, focusing on their applications and ethical challenges. It analyses how AI has transformed learning personalisation, allowing teachers to tailor content and strategies to individual student needs. It also discusses the implications of AI for personalised tutoring, assessment of academic performance and adaptive learning environments. Despite its benefits, the implementation of AI also presents significant challenges, such as data protection, equity in access to technology and the potential dehumanisation of the educational process. Furthermore, the importance of developing transparent algorithms that allow for greater understanding and trust in AI systems is highlighted. The review also addresses ethical issues related to the potential marginalisation of students due to the digital divide and the transformation of the role of the teacher. The article concludes that while AI has enormous potential to improve higher education, it is essential to address ethical and social challenges to ensure its effective and fair implementation.
