Interactive activities and their influence on the knowledge development of education teachers

ABSTRACT
This paper purpose was to discover how interactive activities influence the build-up of knowledge for students who are in a teacher education program at Eloy Alfaro Lay University of Manabí located at the Pedernales Campus. This included looking at how these interactive activities affect the following: teachers' motivation, how they understand subject matter, how often they participate in class, developing critical thinking skills and how they will use this knowledge in their job. The research was done using non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive method and correlational research designs through a mixed-methods approach by distributing attitudinal questionnaires to the 53 student teachers that were involved in the study about their level of motivation towards each interactive activity participated in during class. A structured Likert-type survey measured several dimensions of the research questions; three other dimensions were measured by means of semi-structured interviews with the student teachers; both forms of data collection yielded quantitative data which were analysed by means of descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, frequencies) and non-parametric correlation coefficients of independent and dependent variables. Qualitative data were analysed by content analysis and triangulation of the data. The research findings indicate that interactive activities are an effective means for building knowledge. The research findings also show that interactive activities can also help build motivation toward learning and are related to participatory learning, the development of critical thinking, and the application of learning to real-world situations as part of ongoing professional development. Some of the most evident limitations to this research were time limitations, as well as lack of access to technology.
